Variable Speed Pool Pump Regulations

The Department of Energy has specific regulations in place for pool pumps to help reduce energy consumption. Of note is the new variable speed pool pump law, effective as of July 19th, 2021. Essentially, variable speed pumps will be replacing many single speed pumps, since many of the latter don’t meet the minimum energy efficiency requirements. While homeowners won’t be required to replace their pumps, manufacturers will no longer be able to produce single speed pumps.

The general regulations are as follows:

  • All pumps that have more Total Horsepower (THP) of 1.0 must be variable speed pumps.
  • Pumps with more than 5.0 THP, waterfall pumps, and certain other pumps may be exempt from this rule.
